THE FIRST MEETING OF THE INTERSECTORAL COMMISSION ON ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION WAS HELD

As is known, on October 23, 2020, in order to expand cooperation between Turkmenistan and international structures in the field of environmental protection in various areas, to organize the fulfillment of the obligations assumed to implement the requirements of the relevant international agreements signed and approved by our country, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed a Resolution, in accordance with which the Intersectoral Commission on Environmental Protection was established, its composition and Regulations on it were approved.

On October 31, the first meeting of this Intersectoral Commission was held, which was attended by members of the Commission, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan.

During the meeting, the participants exchanged views on the main areas of the work of the Intersectoral Commission, issues of the work plan for 2020. The issues of implementation by Turkmenistan of the International Convention on Environmental Protection were also voiced. The issues of creating working groups within the framework of this Commission were discussed.

The participants of the meeting separately touched upon the topic of the Aral Sea, the problems of which have an extremely negative impact on nature, climate, and human health. Speaking about the initiative put forward by Turkmenistan to create a UN Special Program for the Aral Sea Basin, the participants noted the importance of the UN General Assembly resolutions adopted at the initiative of our country "On cooperation between the United Nations and the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea". Recall that in May 2021, within the framework of the regular session of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), Turkmenistan will present an initial draft of the concept and structure of the future Special Program for the Aral Sea.
